Türkiye’s insurance and pension sector completed the first half of 2026 while maintaining a strong balance-sheet structure. The sector’s total assets reached 4.381 trillion liras, representing a nominal increase of 45% compared with the same period last year.
During the same period, the sector’s equity rose 58% in nominal terms to 512 billion liras. Real growth stood at 13% for total assets and 20% for equity.
Sector posts net profit of 103.6 billion liras
The sector’s net profit for the first six months amounted to 103.6 billion liras. Non-life insurance companies accounted for 67.5 billion liras of this amount, while life and pension companies generated 36.1 billion liras.
The assets of life and pension companies rose 54% year on year in nominal terms to 2.9 trillion liras. Their equity also increased 64% in nominal terms to approximately 117.4 billion liras, with real growth of 17% in assets and 24% in equity.
Technical profit in life insurance increased 78% in nominal terms and 35% in real terms from the same period last year to 25.7 billion liras. Technical profit in the pension segment stood at 1.3 billion liras, representing nominal growth of 60% and real growth of 21%.
Investment income proves decisive in non-life insurance
The technical loss excluding investment income in non-life insurance reached 45.3 billion liras in the first six months. This represented a 67% nominal increase from the 27.1 billion lira loss recorded in the same period last year.
Investment income transferred from the non-technical account to non-life insurance amounted to 121.1 billion liras. This income increased 29% year on year in nominal terms but declined 2% in real terms.
With the contribution of investment income, the non-life sector’s technical profit rose to 75.9 billion liras. Although technical profit increased 14% in nominal terms, it contracted 14% in real terms.
The sector’s total investment income amounted to 193.7 billion liras, while non-life insurance accounted for 164.6 billion liras. Investment income in non-life insurance increased 25% in nominal terms but decreased 5% in real terms.
Operating expenses outpace premium growth
The sector’s operating expenses increased 25% in the first half of the year from the same period last year to 151.5 billion liras. As the rise in expenses exceeded the 20% nominal growth in premium production, the importance of cost management increased.
Premium production in non-life insurance declined 13% in real terms. Considering the contraction in premium production together with the deterioration in technical results excluding investment income, the increase in claims costs was expected to place greater pressure on technical profitability and period profit.
Ahmet Yaşar: We must strengthen technical profitability
Ahmet Yaşar, president of the Association of Insurance, Reinsurance and Pension Companies of Türkiye, said the sector’s assets approaching 4.4 trillion liras and equity of approximately 512 billion liras were valuable in terms of economic resilience.
Yaşar said the strong balance-sheet structure needed to be supported by sustainable technical profitability, adding that the rise in the technical loss excluding investment income in non-life insurance to 45.3 billion liras pointed to the need to strengthen technical results.
Yaşar said investment income continued to contribute to technical profitability and noted that sound pricing, effective risk management and cost discipline were key priorities. He added that the increase in real technical profitability on the life and pension side demonstrated the importance of the long-term savings and protection system for the economy.
Yaşar announced that in the coming period they aimed to improve technical profitability while maintaining a strong capital structure, increase the insurance coverage rate and ensure that more individuals and businesses gained access to protection.
