Iran’s Foreign Ministry issued a written statement on the United States’ new sanctions against Iran. The statement argued that the sanctions violated the UN Charter, international humanitarian law and human rights, regardless of their name or scope.
The ministry therefore described the sanctions as entirely illegal and unjust. The statement said that all countries were obliged to refrain from implementing the sanctions.
Call on countries not to recognize the sanctions
Iran’s Foreign Ministry also called on governments not to recognize or approve consequences arising from actions that violate the sanctions.
The statement argued that joining the United States’ unilateral sanctions would help Washington impose its will on other states. It said that the sanctions disrupted countries’ legitimate economic and trade relations.
Iran issues response
The ministry said Iran would use all means at its disposal to defend itself against the economic war and threats from the United States and Israel. The statement signaled that the Iranian government could take economic and political measures in response to the sanctions.
The US administration had previously announced what it called “the most crushing” sanctions package in history against Iran and threatened third countries cooperating with Iran with sanctions.
