Israeli authorities have released Hasan Yusuf, a prominent Hamas figure, after more than 31 months of administrative detention. Palestinian sources reported that the process was completed following Yusuf's release.
The 70-year-old Yusuf was detained shortly after the Gaza war began in October 2023. His detention was extended five times since then.
Prolonged Administrative Detention
Yusuf is known as one of the most prominent Hamas leaders in the occupied West Bank. Throughout his political career, he has spent over two decades in Israeli prisons and has been held under administrative detention multiple times during different periods.
The administrative detention practice allows individuals to be held without formal charges or trial, based on security assessments, with extensions possible. Yusuf's detention orders were reportedly renewed repeatedly during his time in prison.
Concerns Raised Over Health Condition
Palestinian sources indicate that Yusuf has experienced various health problems that have emerged or worsened due to his prolonged detention. These sources frequently highlighted his age and the need for regular medical care.
Yusuf is regarded as an influential political figure in the West Bank. He is also known for advocating Palestinian national unity and participating in various national initiatives throughout his political life.
