Red Bull Racing and Audi are implementing the mandatory young driver rule in the first practice session of the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. Accordingly, Ayumu Iwasa will drive Isack Hadjar’s car for Red Bull Racing, while Paul Aron will take to the track in place of Nico Hülkenberg for Audi.
In Formula 1, teams are required to run rookie drivers in at least two practice sessions during the season across both their cars. The opening session in Barcelona is one of the weekends where both teams will give new drivers a chance.
Iwasa to Drive Current F1 Car for the First Time in Barcelona
Ayumu Iwasa announced he will be behind the wheel in the first practice session in Barcelona. The Japanese driver last drove a Formula 1 car at Abu Dhabi last year, and this time he will experience a different challenge with the current car and regulations.
Iwasa said he has spent extensive time preparing in the simulator before the session and aims to learn as much as possible on track while helping the team. This marks Red Bull Racing’s decision to start the weekend with a young driver.
Audi Gives Paul Aron a Chance Instead of Hülkenberg
On the Audi side, Nico Hülkenberg will not participate in the first practice. Instead, former Alpine reserve driver Paul Aron will take to the track.
It was also reported that after the FP1 session in Barcelona, Aron will drive again in another practice session during the Austrian race weekend at the end of the month, replacing Gabriel Bortoleto. This means the young driver’s Formula 1 program will span two consecutive race weekends.
Young Driver Lineup Expands in Barcelona
Not only Red Bull Racing and Audi but also other teams will run rookie drivers in the first practice session in Barcelona. Cadillac, McLaren, and Williams will also put young drivers on track during the same session.
In this context, Cadillac will run Colton Herta in place of Sergio Perez; McLaren will field Leonardo Fornaroli instead of Lando Norris; and Williams will have Luke Browning replace Alex Albon.
The first practice session in Barcelona will start on Friday at 21:30 AEST. This will bring together both current driver lineups and future talents on the same track for the first official F1 session of the weekend.
