The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival announced that it will present the Presidential Award to Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jesse Eisenberg at its 60th edition. The festival described the two as remarkable artists who have strongly shaped contemporary world cinema.
The festival management emphasized that Gyllenhaal and Eisenberg are versatile talents who move effortlessly between acting, directing, screenwriting, and writing. With this choice, Karlovy Vary highlighted both its commitment to independent cinema and its international production strength.
Maggie Gyllenhaal to Receive Award at Opening Ceremony
Gyllenhaal will receive her honor at the opening ceremony of the 60th edition on Friday, July 3. The festival program will also feature a screening of The Bride!, a film written, directed, and produced by Gyllenhaal.
The film is presented as a creative continuation of the Frankenstein narrative. It is inspired by the 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein and Mary Shelley's original work.
The cast includes Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Annette Bening, Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Special Screening Planned for Eisenberg
Jesse Eisenberg is also among the recipients of the festival’s Presidential Award. His new film The Debut, which he wrote and directed, stars Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti.
It was announced that Eisenberg also wrote the music and lyrics for the film, which will be released by A24 in the fall. In honor of Eisenberg, the festival will screen The Double, directed by Richard Ayoade.
Festival Management Praises Both Artists
The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival’s management stated that both artists represent current cinematic trends through their roles as actors, screenwriters, and directors. The festival team noted that these films offer audiences an intense cinematic experience.
The festival’s artistic direction highlighted that Gyllenhaal and Eisenberg carry a transatlantic sensibility, bridging Europe and the New World. The statement emphasized the unique worldview that combines the humor typical of New York intellectuals.
By honoring these two figures in its 60th anniversary program, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival placed contemporary auteur cinema at the heart of the event. Both Gyllenhaal’s and Eisenberg’s projects, along with the ceremonies and screenings, became among the most notable highlights of this year’s festival.
