DEM Party Deputy Group Chairwoman Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit reacted to the Constitutional Court's decision to annul the indefinite regulation on poverty alimony.
In a statement on her social media account, Koçyiğit emphasized that this decision cannot be evaluated independently of the unequal social conditions faced by women in Turkey.
Koçyiğit's message
Koçyiğit pointed out that women's access to employment is limited, unpaid care work largely falls on women's shoulders, and female poverty is deepening.
She said that any regulation targeting alimony carries the risk of weakening women's livelihood security. Koçyiğit stated that alimony is not a favor but a fundamental right that prevents being driven into poverty after divorce.
Koçyiğit noted that no approach that does not strengthen women's economic independence and eliminate inequalities will produce justice.
Reasoned decision and possible regulation
Koçyiğit said they will carefully monitor the reasoned decision and subsequent legal regulations in terms of women's acquired rights.
In her statement, she also expressed that they will not accept any regulation that deepens female poverty further and condemns women to violence and dependency relationships.
While the decision brought alimony debates back to the agenda, Koçyiğit's stance also intensified the discussion on women's rights and social security topics.
