Excavation and restoration work is continuing in Konya to uncover the historic Larende Gate and sections of the city walls. The gate has been largely exposed, including its stones and walls, while wall sections and bastions are being uncovered to the east and west.
Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay said Konya had served as a capital for approximately 200 years, but only limited remains of the city’s inner and outer walls have survived. The fact that the structures in the Larende area are single-story and have no basements strengthened the assessment that the walls and gate may have been preserved there; excavations began following this assessment.

The stonework uncovered in the excavations points to the importance attached to the gate’s construction. A wall structure with a moat in front of it, along with the gate’s original stones and walls, has been exposed. Konya Museum Director Ömer Faruk Türkan said Larende Gate was one of the important stone gates of the outer walls and added that the foundations of the wooden bridge in front of the gate had also been found.

Based on the existing findings, Larende Gate is considered to have been a monumental structure approximately 24 to 25 meters high from its foundation. Approximately 195 meters of city wall has been uncovered in the excavations. Excavation of one of the two bastions in the eastern section of the wall has been completed, while work continues on the other. Restoration and reconstruction work is also accompanying the excavation at the site.
