Spanish footballer Lamine Yamal will become the third youngest player to appear in a World Cup final if he starts against Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
According to Al Jazeera, Yamal, aged 19 years and 6 days, will follow Brazilian legend Pelé (17 years 249 days in 1958) and Italian Giuseppe Bergomi (18 years 201 days in 1982) in this category.
Spain unbeaten with Yamal
According to Opta data, Lamine Yamal has won all 12 matches he has started for Spain in the European Championship and World Cup. This is a record streak that no other European player has achieved.
Best young performance in 60 years
Yamal tops the following categories for a young player in World Cup history over the last 60 years:
- Most shots: 23
- Most shots on target: 10
- Most touches in the opposition penalty area: 51
- Most successful dribbles: 22
Lionel Messi leads the 2026 World Cup in dribbles with 25. Yamal is second with 22, while Messi's tally stands out as the highest by a player aged 30 or over in a tournament since 1966.
Yamal, meanwhile, matched the young player records set by Kylian Mbappé at the 2018 World Cup.

Best Young Player nominees
FIFA has nominated Spain's Pau Cubarsí and Lamine Yamal for the 2026 World Cup Best Young Player award.
The 19-year-old defender Cubarsí played the full 90 minutes in all seven of Spain's matches in the tournament, helping his team concede just one goal. The second youngest player to reach 100 La Liga appearances for Barcelona, Cubarsí showed great consistency in his first World Cup experience.
Yamal, though below expectations in terms of goals, played a key role in Spain's march to the final with his impact on the pitch. A product of the La Masia academy, he has been indispensable for Barcelona since the 2023-24 season.
