As part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, the NEOM mega project is advancing with the Trojena phase, where Turkey's Limak has also entered the field. The company is reported to be responsible for tunnel and excavation works in the mountainous area.
The project, rising in the Jebel al-Lawz mountains about 50 kilometers from the Gulf of Aqaba, aims to create an artificial oasis in barren peaks that lack natural water basins. The region is located 2,600 meters above sea level and experiences snowfall with temperatures dropping below zero in winter months.
Artificial lake created by three massive dams
At the heart of Trojena, a futuristic artificial lake stretching 2.8 kilometers is planned. To sustain this lake, three large dams are being constructed.
The main concrete dam in the project is reported to be 145 meters high and 475 meters long. The second rock-filled dam stands 84 meters tall and uses 4 million cubic meters of rock fill material in its body.
The third dam, known as the "Enchanted Forest Dam," is 38 meters high and 700 meters long. It is noted that rocks excavated from the mountains to form the lake bed are not removed from the site but are directly reused in the dam structures.
$4.7 billion contract
Engineering firm Webuild has signed a $4.7 billion contract for the artificial lake and ski center in the mountains. It is also reported that more than 10,000 workers and engineers are employed at the construction site.
Special tunnels and systems will be established for water management of the lake, and an artificial island designed for tourists to walk on is planned. On the front face of the main dam, a structure called "The Bow" is planned to hang over the valley gap, housing luxury hotels, residential areas, and hospitality facilities.
Goal to be the Gulf's first open-air ski village
Thanks to the natural climate of the Jebel al-Lawz region, suitable conditions for skiing in winter are provided, and Trojena aims to become the Gulf's first open-air ski village with over 30 kilometers of pistes.
The project, which aims to combine water sports and skiing experiences in the same area, was selected as the official center for the 2029 Asian Winter Games before completion. Limak is responsible for constructing the "Vault" section, considered the entrance to Trojena, including building two TBM tunnels with slopes up to 40% and other tunnels.
Limak, often at the center of debates with its projects in Turkey, has attracted attention this time by participating in one of the world's most ambitious mountain tourism projects.
