Mastodon has released their new single titled "Your Ghost Again" to listeners. The song is the first track shared from the band's yet-to-be-announced ninth studio album. The new song directly addresses the band's feelings following the passing of former guitarist Brent Hinds, who died last year at the age of 51. At the heart of the track is the emotional void created by Hinds' loss and the mental turmoil the band experienced living in the same spaces without him. The song also highlights Mastodon's expanded five-member lineup. Keyboardist João Nogueira, who has long been involved in tours and studio work with new guitarist Nick Johnston, is now a full-time member of the band. The track is described as a powerful work that returns to the band's early intense sludge metal style. Especially notable are the hard drums reminiscent of the Leviathan era and country touches; the chorus features a great emotionality that recalls Mastodon's progressive rock years. In the final section of the song, classic progressive keyboard passages come alongside a harsh sludge riff. This structure turns the track into an opening work that both pays homage to the past and conveys the energy of the new lineup. Brann Dailor said the song was inspired by moments experienced in the studio and that they often felt like they saw Hinds in the corner. According to Dailor, after losing someone new, the mind can create the impression that the person is always there. Bill Kelliher stated that they wanted to choose a song that carried the band's character on the first listen. Kelliher expressed that the events and losses are reflected in the song, but he preferred to keep some details private. Troy Sanders explained that the lyrics in the bridge section of the song are a pure thank you directed to Brent Hinds. Sanders emphasized that the things Hinds brought to their lives, sharing thousands of stages together around the world, and unforgettable moments still hold their place. Mastodon is preparing to start their UK and Europe tour in the coming days. The band also announced a North American tour in the fall, supported by Deafheaven and Alcest. The artist presale is planned to start on Wednesday, June 3rd at 10:00 local time, and general sales will open on Friday, June 5th at 10:00 local time.
