Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she was pleased to receive the congratulatory message sent by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan because the right-wing coalition government she leads had become Italy’s longest-serving government in 80 years.
Italy has been a republic since 1946, and the Meloni government, which has been in office since 2022, became the longest-serving government in the country’s history. Meloni responded to congratulatory messages from world leaders.
Addressing Erdoğan, Meloni said the two countries were connected by historic ties and shared interests. Emphasizing the importance of developing dialogue and cooperation between Italy and Türkiye, Meloni said relations between Rome and Ankara had strengthened in recent years in areas of common interest and on issues related to the Mediterranean, security and regional stability.
Meloni said she believed this process could continue through concrete steps and create new opportunities for cooperation for the benefit of the peoples of both countries.
In a post on September 4, Erdoğan also congratulated Meloni on becoming the “longest-serving prime minister” of the Italian Republic. Erdoğan said he believed cooperation and solidarity between Türkiye and Italy would grow stronger with each passing day.
