Turkish Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş issued a statement on the situation of Rached Ghannouchi, the detained leader of Tunisia’s Ennahda Movement and former speaker of the Tunisian Parliament.
Kurtulmuş said Ghannouchi had ended his hunger and medication strike at the request of the team monitoring his health. He said Ghannouchi’s advanced age and existing health problems must be taken into account and called for the seriousness of the situation not to be overlooked.

Kurtulmuş calls for medical support and freedom
Kurtulmuş said Ghannouchi had devoted his life to the future of the Tunisian people and to the struggle for freedom, justice and democracy. He added that Ghannouchi had not compromised his beliefs despite pressure, exile and prison sentences.
Kurtulmuş said Ghannouchi had earned recognition in Tunisia and among international public opinion through his position during the democratic transition, his intellectual contributions and his ideas. Pointing to the bonds of fraternity between the peoples of Türkiye and Tunisia, Kurtulmuş conveyed his wishes for Ghannouchi’s recovery.
