Chad Smith played drums during the show, while Klinghoffer switched to keyboards. The guitarist lineup also included Troy Van Leeuwen and Chris Chaney. The performance stood out with its energetic tempo and Stipe's distinctive vocals.
This stage was noted as one of the first major television appearances related to Stipe's new solo era. The artist had previously introduced his second new song, 'The Rest Of Ever,' on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in April.
New album preparation continues
Stipe had previously announced that his first solo album is expected to be released within this year. He said he has been working on the album for several years and is making the final touches.
Describing the sound world of the album, the artist expressed that one of the songs sounds like "the voice of a tree hearing itself for the first time." In the same explanation, he also shared that the sound of a tree recorded in his garden in Georgia inspired him.
Among Stipe's solo singles are the 2019 'Your Capricious Soul,' the following year's 'Drive To The Ocean,' and 'No Time For Love Like Now,' released with Aaron Dessner's Big Red Machine project.
Maintains connection with R.E.M.
It is noted that Stipe maintains good relations with his former R.E.M. bandmates Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Bill Berry. The group members reunited when they were inducted together into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in the summer of 2024.
Earlier this year, Stipe also appeared as a guest at one of Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy's Lifes Rich Pageant tour concerts in Brooklyn. That night, performances of R.E.M.'s 'These Days' and 'The Great Beyond' were delivered. A year earlier, he had sung 'Pretty Persuasion' with the same group.
