Moldova's opposition Socialist Party (PSRM), citing the growing state budget deficit, submitted bills to parliament proposing a cap on salaries for senior officials.
Announcing the proposal, Vice Speaker of Parliament and one of the socialist leaders, Vlad Batrince, said they proposed limiting the income of public-sector managers to three average salaries across the economy and ensuring that all bonuses and additional payments do not exceed 50 percent of the base salary.
"In the poverty of our Moldova, cases where officials receive 100,000 lei (around $5,500) per month must be categorically eliminated," Batrince said.
Reaction to central bank payments
The Vice Speaker also called for an investigation into payments at the National Bank of Moldova. Batrince noted that the management of the regulatory body receives monthly salaries ranging from 120,000 to 130,000 lei ($6,600 to $7,200), while the administrative council meets only once a quarter and some members may not even be in the country. The politician added that such facts should form the basis for criminal cases.
The Socialist Party also demands cutting funding for the Constitutional Court and the State Chancellery, reducing the number of ministries, and conducting audits at all state enterprises to reduce budget spending.
Protest rally in Chisinau
On the day the bills were submitted, a rally of opposition supporters took place in front of the parliament building in the capital, Chisinau. The event, organized by Vasile Kostiuk, leader of the "Democracy at Home" party, was also joined by the PSRM, the "National Alternative Movement" party of Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban, and the "Our Party" political force of MP Renato Usatîi.
Protesters argued that the burden of the budget deficit falls on ordinary taxpayers and demanded the resignation of the government and an urgent review of the finance ministry's fiscal initiatives, which they say are destroying people's purchasing power.
Budget deficit growing
The Moldovan government's new tax policy is advancing amid a growing fiscal imbalance in the country. According to official data, Moldova's state budget deficit in the first five months of 2026 increased by 11.4 percent to 7.6 billion lei. Government debt in the deficit structure rose more than fourfold compared to the same period last year.
