Across Turkey, mosques resounded with the call to prayer and prayers in memory of the martyrs of the treacherous July 15, 2016 coup attempt.
Citizens showed intense participation in commemoration programs held at mosques across the country, particularly in Istanbul. Special programs were also conducted at Istanbul's major places of worship, including the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, Sultanahmet Mosque, Fatih Mosque, Süleymaniye Mosque, Taksim Mosque and Büyük Çamlıca Mosque.
During the programs, Quran recitations were performed, hymns were sung for the July 15 martyrs, and prayers were offered.
Turkey commemorates the July 15 coup attempt every year, in which 253 people were martyred and more than 2,000 were injured in 2016. Ankara states that the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETÖ) was behind the coup attempt.
