460-year-old tradition in Mostar
The Mostar Bridge was built in 1566 by Mimar Hayrettin, a student of Mimar Sinan. Since then, the diving competition has been held continuously, attracting athletes from Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as from Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and other countries.
The bridge, known as the 'soul' of Mostar, was destroyed on November 9, 1993, by tank fire from Croat forces during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Despite the war conditions, the people of Mostar continued the traditional diving feast from the remains of the bridge.
Reconstructed in 2004 true to its original form with the initiatives of Türkiye, the bridge continues to be a symbol of tolerance and cultural diversity. The famous traveler Evliya Çelebi also mentioned the diving competitions at Mostar Bridge in his work Seyahatname.
