The 8th Turkish-Arab Artists' Gathering began at Istanbul's Rami Library. Organized under the slogan "Colors paint stories", the event is being held in cooperation with Gaziosmanpaşa Municipality by the Turkish-Arab Friendship Association and the Turkish-Arab Art House.
In addition to exhibitions of painting, calligraphy and handicrafts, the program includes artist meet-and-greets, talks, cultural performances and music nights. Speaking at the opening, Turkish-Arab Friendship Association Chairman Metin Turan said the gathering brings together culture, art and friendship under one roof, stating: "Art is a universal bridge that transcends language, religion and nationality. We aim to strengthen this bridge between Turkey and the Arab world." Turan added that bringing together artists who came to Turkey after the Arab Spring is also among the goals.
Rami Library Director Ali Çelik, for his part, said: "Turks and Arabs are not two separate peoples, but the two foremost founding elements of Islamic civilization. There is a great need for initiatives that will strengthen communication and friendship between us, and artists have an important role to play in this dialogue." Çelik noted that the library administration will continue to highlight the work of artists.
Speaking on behalf of Turkish artists, illumination master Zeynep Sihoun said she is participating in the event with her work titled "The Kaaba Door Curtain" and that she has been engaged in traditional arts for 21 years. Sihoun emphasized that over the two days, participants will experience Turkish-Arab friendship through the unifying power of art. Also present at the opening was Latife Muhammed Celasi, President of the Tunisian Plastic Arts Association.
Featuring artists from Turkey as well as Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen, Palestine, Kuwait, Sudan, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, the gathering will run for two days.
