A newly released scene for Supergirl has sparked discussions that the film might be linked to a larger story within the DC universe. The design of the capsule used for Kara Zor-El's arrival on Earth draws attention, with visuals suggesting a possible Brainiac connection.
Kara Zor-El is portrayed by Milly Alcock in the film. The way the scene unfolds is seen as a nod to the character's first appearance in Action Comics #252 from 1959; however, instead of the traditional rocket, a silver-colored sphere with hexagonal patterns is used this time.
One notable detail is this hexagonal motif. This pattern, frequently seen in visuals associated with Brainiac, has led to speculation that there might be a link extending to the new Superman film, Man of Tomorrow.
Why is the Brainiac possibility gaining attention?
Brainiac is typically known in comics as a green-skinned character wearing a purple costume. The character first appeared in Action Comics #242. However, Brainiac's appearance has evolved over the years; in the 1980s, he was given a more skeletal form.
In this form, a hexagonal pattern in silver or gold tones was sometimes used around the character's head. The presence of the same design on a large spaceship has drawn parallels with the visuals in the new Supergirl scene.
Information shared about Man of Tomorrow indicates that the film is not just a Superman sequel but also features a story centered around Lex Luthor. Statements suggesting that Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, will join Superman in confronting Brainiac have strengthened this interpretation.
Earlier images of the film showing Hoult in battle armor have kept the discussion alive. It was noted that this armor first appeared in the 1983 Action Comics #544, which also introduced Brainiac's skeletal form.
Why might Kara Zor-El be in such a ship?
The biggest question about the new scene is why Kara is shown inside a vessel associated with Brainiac. The prevailing view is that answers might be found more in animated adaptations than in the comics.
In Superman: The Animated Series, Brainiac was reimagined as an artificial intelligence used on Krypton. In this version, Brainiac turned against its creators and misled them about Krypton's condition.
Similarly, Smallville portrayed the character as a human form arriving on Earth. These examples have strengthened the idea that the new DC universe might offer a different take on Brainiac's origins.
It is also notable that Kryptonians in the new universe are not portrayed as flawlessly as in the comics. In Supergirl, it was revealed that Kara grew up in Argo City and will spend more time with Zor-El and Alura In-Ze. While this approach suggests a warmer family story for the character, there is also speculation that the same origin might unintentionally lay the groundwork for Brainiac's creation.
If this interpretation proves correct, the joyful reunion scenes in Supergirl could turn into a darker narrative in Man of Tomorrow. The film is scheduled for release in theaters on June 26, 2026.
