NextGenCOP 30.5 will be held in Istanbul ahead of the 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31), which Türkiye is hosting for the first time this year.
The program aims to involve young people in the process as actors who develop ideas, conduct negotiations, seek consensus and produce solutions, rather than merely stakeholders following the climate agenda.
200 delegates will work in six negotiating blocs
A total of 200 delegates will participate in the program, which will be opened on August 28 by COP31 President and Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum.
The delegates will exchange views through six negotiating blocs and three negotiation topics. Drawing inspiration from the United Nations' climate diplomacy process, participants will negotiate, draft and vote on a joint climate agreement.
Negotiations will focus on three main areas
The work במסגרת NextGenCOP 30.5 will focus on mitigation, climate finance and adaptation.
The first day of the program will feature networking and orientation activities, while the second day will include the opening session and negotiations. The third day will feature the "Mitigation and Climate Finance Workshop," followed on the fourth day by the "Adaptation and Crisis Management Workshop."
The fifth day will feature the "Final Negotiations and Antalya Agreement." The agreement, the summit's final outcome, will be signed and announced.
Young people will draft a climate agreement
As a result of their work throughout the week, the delegates will prepare a joint text inspired by the terminology and decision-making processes of United Nations climate diplomacy.
The proposals of the six negotiating blocs will be considered in plenary. The parties will exchange views on the texts, submit amendments and vote on the final agreement.
Through this process, young participants will gain hands-on experience of how an international climate agreement takes shape, from the idea stage through negotiations, consensus-building and the final decision-making process.
Blue and Green Zone activities will be held
As part of the Climate Diplomacy Simulation in the Blue Zone, delegates will represent international negotiating blocs and seek consensus on global climate policies.
In the Innovation and Entrepreneurship program in the Green Zone, a total of 10 climate-focused ventures—five from Cambridge's entrepreneurship ecosystem and five from Türkiye—will meet with delegates, investors and policymakers. The ventures will give three-minute presentations and conduct technology demonstrations.
Sustainability practices will be used at the event
As part of the Zero Waste and Sustainability Event, food and energy savings will be achieved, the use of single-use plastics will be prohibited and digital documentation will be preferred.
Participants' name badges will be made from seed paper that can be returned to nature.
Cultural events will also be held as part of the program
A Culture and Folklore Gala will be held on August 28, with delegates attending in their traditional clothing.
Following the closing ceremony on August 31, a torchlit island walk themed "Keep the 1.5°C Target Within Reach" will be held to draw attention to the global warming limit.
