President Erhürman of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus held a press conference at the presidency in Nicosia to assess his meetings in New York. Erhürman said they were ready to hold result-oriented talks with all sides to resolve the Cyprus issue.
Erhürman said the talks should not be held merely to bring the parties together or provide an opportunity for a photo, adding, "We want 3+1 or 5+1 meetings that will bring us to a solution and produce successful results."
"I want to make progress"
Erhürman said they would continue every effort for a solution in good faith and recalled that he had not rejected the possibility of trilateral talks in New York. He stressed that his main aim was to make progress.
Erhürman said, "Do we want a solution or negotiations? When there are seven items for progress, bringing 19 new items to the table is like adding water to a cooked meal."
Proposal for marathon talks in Nicosia
Erhürman said talks could be held in Nicosia and stressed that they needed to be productive. He said they would not negotiate merely for the sake of holding talks and wanted marathon talks capable of producing results.
Erhürman said they were determined to explain the issues to all sides and keep efforts for a solution on the agenda. He said they were ready for meetings once conditions for a successful outcome had emerged and stressed that the process needed to move forward.
Seven items for a 5+1 meeting
Erhürman said the United Nations secretary-general had called for a 5+1 meeting at the end of his visit to Cyprus and had listed seven items in this context.
- Crossing points
- Mine clearance
- Joint response to disasters on the island
- Irregular migration
- Civil society
- Sports
- Children born to couples in mixed marriages
Erhürman criticized the Greek Cypriot leader for bringing a new 19-point proposal to the latest meeting while these items were on the agenda. He said the existing items should be prioritized and efforts should focus on achieving results so that the solution process could move forward.
