The Assessment, Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) has published its guide on how scores for the 2026 Higher Education Institutions Exam (YKS) will be calculated. The score calculation is done by combining performance in the Basic Proficiency Test (TYT), Field Proficiency Tests (AYT), and Foreign Language Test (YDT) sessions with the Secondary Education Achievement Score (OBP).
How is the raw score calculated?
The first step of the calculation is to determine the candidate's number of correct and incorrect answers in each test. The rule of '4 wrong answers deduct 1 correct answer' is applied in the ÖSYM system. To calculate a score from a test, the candidate must have obtained at least 0.5 raw points (net) from that test.
Standard score conversion
After the net scores are determined, the mean and standard deviation values of the tests are calculated based on the results of all candidates who took the exam that year. Using these values, the candidate's net scores are converted into standard scores (Z and T scores) with a mean of 50 and a standard deviation of 10.
Because of this system, 1 net in a difficult test with a low average across Turkey can yield more points than 1 net in an easier test.
Weighted scores and contribution rates
Standard scores are multiplied by the weight coefficients in the ÖSYM guide to convert them into weighted scores. For the TYT score, the Turkish and Basic Mathematics tests each have a 33% weight, while the Social Sciences and Science tests have a 17% weight.
For AYT and YDT score types, the contribution of TYT is set at 40%, and the contribution of the relevant field tests is set at 60%. A base score of 100 is added at the beginning of the calculation for all score types.
Adding OBP to the placement score
The final score used for university preferences is the Placement Score, obtained by adding the candidate's Secondary Education Achievement Score (OBP), which reflects their high school graduation success, to the calculated raw score.
