Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş posted a message on social media to mark the 46th anniversary of the Sept. 12, 1980 military coup.
Kurtulmuş said the Sept. 12 period had left deep wounds in society's collective memory, adding that the pain of those days, when the national will was suspended and fundamental rights were severely undermined, had not been forgotten.
In his message, Kurtulmuş said coups and attempts at tutelage that emerged in different periods had been thwarted by the nation's commitment to its will and democracy. He said there should be no place in the country's future for any group or mindset claiming power and legitimacy above national sovereignty.
Kurtulmuş said he condemned coups and attempts at tutelage, expressing his faith in Türkiye's democratic maturity and the bonds of fraternity. He commemorated the victims of all coups, particularly the Sept. 12 coup, and extended his condolences for citizens who lost their lives.
