It has been reported that there is a significant deadlock in the peace initiative aimed at ending the long-standing conflicts between Turkey and Kurdish militants. Murat Karayılan, one of the senior leaders of the PKK, stated that the Turkish government has not implemented the legal and political reforms needed to advance the process. Karayılan expressed that the PKK has ended armed struggle and declared a ceasefire, while saying the process is currently frozen.
It was noted that, following the call of the PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, the group decided to disarm and disband, and withdrew from some regions. However, it was stated that the Turkish government has not taken fundamental steps such as releasing opposition politicians and activists, and that Öcalan is still imprisoned.
On the other hand, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan claimed that the peace process is progressing positively and stated that pessimistic scenarios about the process are not based on facts. While emphasizing that the future of the process depends on the stance of the Turkish state, a warning was made that the current situation may pose risks for stability in the region.
