Preparations have accelerated for Türkiye's first Uzbekistan state school, which will be built in Istanbul's Bakırköy district. Uzbekistan's Consul General in Istanbul, Sherzod Abdunazarov, met with Bakırköy District Governor Ayşegül Ovalıoğlu to discuss the project.
Uzbek Dunyo reported that the parties agreed to work to begin construction of the school as soon as possible. The Bakırköy District Governor's Office also stated that it was ready to provide all possible support during the construction and organizational stages of the project.

Uzbekistan to finance the project, Turkish companies to build the school
The school will be fully financed by the Uzbek government, while Turkish companies will undertake its construction. The school will follow a curriculum aligned with Uzbekistan's education system, and teachers from Uzbekistan will work there. Özgüven is preparing the project's design.
Consul General Abdunazarov also met with representatives of the Ministry of National Education and officials from the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education on the same day. Turkish officials provided information about efforts to address the deficiencies identified during the project's expert assessment.

Foundation stone laid in January
The school's foundation stone-laying ceremony was held on January 29, 2026, in the courtyard of Özyazıcı Special Needs Secondary School in Ataköy, Bakırköy. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev attended the ceremony via a live connection from the Presidential Complex. Uzbekistan's Minister of Preschool and School Education Ezazhan Kerimova, Deputy Minister of National Education Bilal Macit and Istanbul Governor Davut Gül also attended the ceremony.
The education ministers of the two countries signed a land allocation protocol for the school on November 1, 2025. Under the protocol, Uzbekistan allocated a plot of land in Tashkent to Türkiye indefinitely and free of charge through a right of usufruct. Türkiye, while retaining ownership, also granted Uzbekistan free use of the land in Bakırköy.
