President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan attended the opening ceremony of the Halkalı-Istanbul Airport metro line, built on Istanbul's European side.
Speaking at the opening, Erdoğan wished the new line well for Istanbul and all its users.
Erdoğan said, "Today we are completing a metro project with a total length of 69 kilometers. We are placing Turkey among the countries with the longest and fastest metro lines."
The President stated that with the Halkalı-Arnavutköy section also entering service, this line will become one of the longest metro lines not only in Turkey but in the world.
He expressed expectations that the project will save a total of 117 million hours of time over 25 years and create an economic return of approximately 935 million Euros.
Erdoğan emphasized that adding new metro lines to Istanbul will alleviate traffic congestion in the city.
A group of journalists accompanied President Erdoğan on a trial run from Halkalı to Kayaşehir station.
Erdoğan said the train reached a speed of 110 kilometers per hour and that passengers did not feel the number of stations passed due to the comfort level and service quality.
He announced that use of the new line will be free until the upcoming July 31.
Regional Diplomacy and NATO Summits
In his speech, President Erdoğan also touched on Turkey's policies towards regional crises.
Erdoğan stated that Turkey is not an easy target in regional crises, but rather a key actor in solution efforts, as was most recently seen in the Iran war.
He noted that Turkey is strengthening its position as one of the effective actors in global diplomacy.
He said Turkey is preparing to host NATO leaders, including US President Donald Trump, in Ankara on July 7-8.
Prior to that, he added, the NATO Parliamentary Summit will be held in Istanbul on June 28-29, and many international events will be held under Turkey's auspices throughout the year.
Erdoğan said, "The year 2026 will be a year full of summits for Turkey."
