The Washington Post reported that U.S. intelligence agencies have issued a significant warning regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Citing unnamed U.S. officials, the newspaper reported that intelligence assessments indicate it is "likely" that Netanyahu will take steps that could undermine U.S. President Donald Trump's "efforts to reach a lasting peace agreement with Iran."
Lebanon Attacks and Domestic Politics
Intelligence assessments suggested that Israel intends to continue its attacks on Lebanon, a situation that would violate a core element of the U.S.-Iran understanding.
A new report claimed that Netanyahu's political future ahead of planned general elections in Israel this fall depends on him demonstrating to the domestic public that he will not withdraw troops from Lebanon and is determined to escalate conflicts with Hezbollah.
Repercussions of the Understanding in Israel
The report also stated that the terms of the understanding reached between the U.S. and Iran have caused disappointment in Israel, with U.S. officials assessing that these terms "weaken Israel's strategy of maintaining maximum pressure on Tehran."
It was noted that there is a perception in Israel that the understanding could restrict Israel's legitimate self-defense capabilities against Hezbollah. The report stated that if Israel withdraws from Lebanon or ends any conflict, it would be seen as a defeat for Netanyahu in Israel.
It was suggested that even if Israel ends its attacks on Lebanon, its likely refusal to withdraw troops from the country's south could "doom the U.S.-Iran understanding to failure."
The warnings come at a time of escalating tension between the Netanyahu and Trump administrations. Previously, a senior U.S. official claimed that a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah went into effect at 16:00 Turkish Time.
