Cristiano Ronaldo finally joined the World Cup goal fest. The star footballer scored two first-half goals in Portugal's 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan, responding to criticism directed at himself and his team.
Portugal had disappointed in the tournament's opening match with a 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo. Ronaldo's goals brought immense relief to both the player and the team.
With these goals, Ronaldo made history as the first footballer to score in six different World Cups. He also surpassed Eusebio to become Portugal's all-time top scorer in World Cup finals.
Portugal manager Roberto Martinez commented on Ronaldo's performance, stating, "He is an icon and a role model in the national team. He has a fantastic attitude on the pitch and in the dressing room."
Martinez noted that Ronaldo's rivalry with players like Lionel Messi is important for both and pushes them to stay at the highest level. "I believe both players have developed football over the years," he said.
As he left the pitch after his two goals, Ronaldo shouted "I'm back!" to the television cameras. However, Martinez said he never witnessed his player doubt himself. "He is a human being and he is allowed to have emotions. Regardless of today, I have never worked with a player who is so hungry to work the next day," he added.
Uzbekistan manager Fabio Cannavaro, who won the cup with Italy in 2006, heaped praise on Ronaldo's long career. Cannavaro said, "When you play against Ronaldo, you cannot give him anything. Even if you give him a centimetre, he will score."
FIFA President Gianni Infantino also congratulated Ronaldo for his "incredible achievement" and extended his best wishes for the rest of the tournament.
