After the match at BC Place Stadium, Australia head coach Tony Popovic said the result against Türkiye was not a surprise for his side.
Popovic emphasized his confidence in the team, saying, "For many people this result might be a shock, but for us and our players it's not a shock."
Popovic stated that Australia's performance was the result of planned work, and expressed that his squad has the capacity to achieve better results. The experienced coach said they could have scored more goals, but the victory still gave the team a big morale boost.
Popovic said all his players showed a strong and resilient stance in defense. He linked this performance to the resilience needed to win matches at the World Cup.
Popovic acknowledged that Türkiye has talented players, and that the opponents were able to create danger throughout the match. Nevertheless, he explained that they managed to apply pressure in certain areas and largely executed their defensive plan.
Responding to the question "Does this victory change the perception?" after the match, Popovic said he wasn't focusing on that. The coach reminded that Australia has a match against the United States ahead, and said the team is now entering a journey and recovery process.
Popovic also thanked the fans across the country for their support. He added that his goalkeeper also made important saves against Türkiye's effective free kicks.
