Russia launched a major attack on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv overnight with hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and dozens of missiles. According to Reuters, at least 18 people were killed and more than 90 others were wounded when residential buildings were hit.
Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched 74 missiles and 496 UAVs during the night. Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat noted that the number of ballistic missiles was unusually high and the interception rate remained low due to a shortage of Patriot missiles.
The attack caused the most extensive damage in Kyiv in 2026 and was the deadliest assault on the capital since at least May, when a strike that collapsed an apartment building killed 24 people.
Zelenskyy: 'Air defense supply an absolute priority'
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who cut short his visit to Ireland and returned to Ukraine, said damage was recorded at more than 20 locations in the capital. 'The main attack targeted Kyiv. Supplying air defense systems to Ukraine is an absolute and critical priority,' he said.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko declared Friday a day of mourning and said damage was recorded in many districts of the city of around 3 million people.
UN representative: 'Russia should be treated as a pariah state'
Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Andriy Melnyk, told Fox News Digital in an exclusive statement that the attack was 'the most terrifying night for Kyiv since the start of the full-scale invasion.' Melnyk said his mother-in-law 'felt like the biblical apocalypse was happening.'
Melnyk called on the international community to question Russia's status in the UN Security Council, saying, 'This barbaric Russia is still treated as a normal member state at the UN. It is time to end this parallel reality. Russia should be treated as a pariah state.'
EU signals new sanctions
The European Union's Ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Mathernova, said Russia 'brought hell to Kyiv,' noting that the building where diplomatic staff were staying was also hit, but the diplomats were not injured, though their belongings were damaged.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said she would propose new sanctions targeting entities that support Russia's military-industrial complex in response to the attacks. 'The more strikes Moscow launches against civilians, the more sanctions must be imposed,' Kallas said.
Russia: 'It was a retaliatory strike'
Russia's Defence Ministry said in a statement on Telegram that the 'large-scale attack' targeted military and energy facilities and airfields in Kyiv and other regions using long-range high-precision weapons and UAVs. Moscow claimed the strike was in retaliation for Ukraine's drone attacks on Russia.
Meanwhile, Ukraine reported that it struck an oil refinery in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod region, and the regional governor said one person was killed.
Neighbouring countries on alert
NATO and EU member Poland scrambled fighter jets as a precaution. Finland also declared a temporary flight restriction zone over the eastern Gulf of Finland.
Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu told Fox News Digital that Russian drones were detected in Ukraine about 30 kilometers from the Romanian border on Wednesday, prompting NATO air policing aircraft to scramble. Țoiu added that two British Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon jets and a Romanian Air Force IAR 330 Puma helicopter monitored the area.
Russia has killed thousands of civilians in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities in attacks since launching its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Moscow denies deliberately targeting civilians.
