Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mariya Zakharova strongly criticized the European Union's decision to deploy warships to stop and inspect foreign vessels deemed suspicious in the Mediterranean. Zakharova stated that Moscow condemns this decision and will take all necessary measures to protect the ships.
Zakharova argued that the approach introduced by the European Union poses a threat to maritime security. She claimed that civilian ships are being intimidated, which she described as unacceptable.
Objection to the term "shadow fleet"
The Russian spokeswoman noted that there is no concept of a "shadow fleet" in international law. She said this term is a political invention fabricated by the European Union.
Zakharova stated that if the IRINI naval force deployed in the Mediterranean is used to inspect or seize ships allegedly carrying Russian oil, it would constitute a clear violation of international law.
Moscow's message
Zakharova also emphasized that Russia reserves the right to use all political, legal, and other means at its disposal to protect maritime security and the legitimate interests of shipowners. The statement highlighted that tensions between Russia and the European Union have resurfaced over maritime transport and sanctions enforcement.
