NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that the US decision to reduce its contributions in Europe will be implemented immediately from a planning perspective. He emphasized that this is part of preparations within the alliance.
At the start of the NATO Defense Ministers Meeting in Brussels, Rutte conveyed that the reorganization of the US contributions to the NATO Force Model is on the agenda. According to this, a reduction compared to the past is anticipated, but the US remains important for the alliance.
Allies Preparing to Fill the Gap in Europe
Rutte said European countries have begun to compensate for the emerging shortfall. He noted that some of the work has been completed while other parts are ongoing.
The Secretary General stated that assuming Article 5 would come into effect in the event of a possible war, all allies would do their utmost to sustain the conflict. Within this framework, he said the US contribution remains significant but should be considered at a lower level compared to the past.
Defense Production and Ukraine Support to be Discussed at Ankara Summit
Rutte shared that preparations for the Ankara Summit on July 7-8 were also discussed at the meeting. He said the summit will focus on concrete steps to increase defense industry production and support for Ukraine.
Rutte also evaluated the G7 Summit held in Evian-les-Bains hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron. He described the summit as producing positive outcomes by bringing leaders, including US President Donald Trump, together on support for Ukraine.
He said Trump is trying to overcome the diplomatic deadlock in Ukraine and has taken important steps for Kiev, including critical military aid such as Patriot missiles.
Strait of Hormuz and NATO’s Role
Rutte touched on the agreement between the US and Iran, calling it important for reducing nuclear capacity. He noted that ballistic missile capabilities pose a threat not only to the Middle East but also to Europe and other regions.
The Secretary General reiterated NATO’s readiness to take on a role in the Strait of Hormuz. He said G7 leaders are evaluating what steps can be taken to ensure freedom of navigation.
Hegseth’s Return to NATO Headquarters
Responding to a question about US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s return to NATO headquarters after about a year, Rutte said Hegseth is a great friend of the alliance. He stated that the US clearly expresses its commitment to NATO while also reminding of the expectation for a fair distribution of the burden-sharing with Europe and Canada.
