Serena Williams' return to professional tennis lasted only one match at the grass court tournament at Queen’s Club. The 44-year-old Williams played her first professional match here since the 2022 US Open.
Williams, paired with 19-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko, made a strong start by defeating the third seeds Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe 7-6 (2), 6-2. However, the duo was scheduled to face Leylah Fernandez and Laura Siegemund in the quarterfinals.
Mboko withdrew from the tournament on Thursday due to a knee injury she sustained during her singles match against Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday. As a result, Williams' comeback journey at Queen’s Club ended after just one match.
Williams is expected to make her next appearance at the Berlin Open in Germany next week. Her partner for that tournament has not yet been announced.
Before stepping away from the courts, Williams had won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, including seven Wimbledon victories. She described her retirement process not as "retiring" but as "evolving in a different direction."
