Sierra Leone to Accept West African Migrants Deported from the USA
Sierra Leone will accept West African migrants deported under an agreement with the USA. The first group will be brought to the country on May 20.
According to information given to Reuters by Sierra Leone's Foreign Minister Timothy Kabba, the country will accept migrants from member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) who have been deported by the USA under an agreement between the two countries. According to the agreement, 300 people per year and a maximum of 25 people per month will be brought to Sierra Leone. It was reported that the first flight will take place on May 20 and 25 people will be brought from Senegal, Ghana, Guinea, and Nigeria. The USA had previously sent third-country nationals to African countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and Eswatini. However, this practice has been criticized due to the lack of legal basis and the fact that the people sent are not citizens of the countries they come from. Sierra Leone's acceptance of migrants only from ECOWAS countries is similar to Ghana's practice. It is not yet clear whether the migrants will be allowed to stay in Sierra Leone. Kabba stated that this agreement is part of bilateral relations with the USA and aims to support US immigration policies. The US Department of State has not yet commented on the matter.
