The decision to be implemented for the first time in Turkey starts tomorrow; smoking will not be allowed on four famous beaches. Within the scope of the Blue Mediterranean Initiative carried out by the Antalya Governorship, a historic step is being taken to prevent environmental pollution. Preparing for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31), Antalya is banning smoking on its four world-famous beaches to protect the marine ecosystem and provide a clean environment for children. SMOKING WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ON 4 WORLD-FAMOUS BEACHESThe tourism capital, which will host one of the world's most important climate summits, COP31, is imposing restrictions on smoking along the coastal strips to free the seas from cigarette butt pollution. This environmental movement, which focuses on families breathing easily and protecting children from passive smoking, will initially be implemented in the Lara, Belek, Çamyuva, and Beach Park areas. CIGARETTE BUTT WASTE WILL NOW BE KEPT AWAY FROM BLUE WATERSCigarette butts, which accumulate on beaches and mix with the sea through waves causing severe damage to natural life, will now be kept away from blue waters thanks to the new regulation. This local environmental initiative started by Antalya actually carries the first signs of a much larger tobacco control plan being prepared nationwide. The Ministry of Health is working on a new draft law that aims to eliminate the distinction between indoor and outdoor areas and expand smoke-free zones to all public spaces. This draft, which has reached its final stage with contributions from relevant institutions and officials, includes beaches among the red zones completely closed to tobacco products. THE NEW LAW PROPOSAL EVEN AIMS TO END CIGARETTE SALESThe most striking goal of the prepared new law proposal is to completely end the sale of tobacco products within Turkey as of January 1, 2040. Until this ultimate goal is reached, smoking will only be possible in narrowly defined areas with very strict rules. In addition to children's parks, places of worship, educational institutions at all levels, and sports facilities, beaches will also be places where smoking is strictly prohibited. For those who want to smoke in hospital and university campuses, special areas will be created at least 20 meters away from buildings, and a minimum distance of 200 meters between smoking cabins to be established on the beaches will be mandatory. SMOKING IS ALSO BANNED ON EUROPEAN BEACHESThe cleaning movement started by Turkey on its beaches directly overlaps with a growing global environmental trend. Today, France is rapidly expanding the scope of the smoking ban along its coastal strips, while hundreds of beaches in Spain have already become smoke-free. Similarly, local governments in Italy and Belgium are significantly restricting tobacco use on beaches. Australia has been successfully implementing smoke-free beach rules for many years, especially in coastal areas heavily frequented by children.
