The South Korean army has begun turning more to artificial intelligence, robots and autonomous systems in technical maintenance and logistics as troop numbers decline due to the country’s falling population.
South Korean Army Headquarters has called for research into transforming basic technical maintenance operations through automated systems as part of the “smart field maintenance support system” project.
To be examined under ArmyTiger L
The research will be conducted under ArmyTiger L, the logistics component of the Army’s plan to modernize its ArmyTiger initiative.
The study will assess AI-powered predictive maintenance, the automated management of maintenance information and the use of robots in maintenance operations. Language models and machine-learning technologies are planned for use in the process.

Autonomous logistics options to be assessed
The South Korean army will also examine automated storage and transport systems in warehouses, autonomous logistics operations, delivery by unmanned aerial vehicles and autonomous vehicles.
Systems for transporting palletized cargo are also included in the assessment. Some of these solutions are already being tested.
