Bahrami, who has taken to the court in exhibition matches for nearly 50 years, came to Ankara as part of the Türk Telekom Ankara Open WTA 125 Tennis Tournament. Bahrami played at Topspin Tennis Academy Bilkent and expressed his pleasure at being in Ankara and meeting spectators.

Bahrami said tennis was an important part of his life and that he greatly enjoyed playing exhibition matches in front of people. Saying he had wanted to become a tennis player since childhood, Bahrami explained that he pursued his dream despite the obstacles he encountered during his career.
Bahrami reached the doubles final at the 1989 French Open. He said he had played on the world’s major tennis courts, including Flushing Meadows, Wimbledon, Roland Garros and the Australian Open, adding that being in Ankara was special for him.
The ban in Iran changed the course of his career
Bahrami said tennis was banned in Iran nearly 50 years ago and that the courts were closed. Saying it was difficult for him to stay away from tennis, Bahrami noted that he left the country and continued playing abroad.
Bahrami said he was pleased to be invited to exhibition matches in cities around the world and viewed his ability to meet people on the court today as a result of his love of tennis.
“I don’t want to play tennis without spectators”
Known for his entertaining style on court, Bahrami said his connection with spectators was at the heart of his approach to tennis. He said spectators were the main reason he played tennis and that he enjoyed entertaining people and performing in front of crowds.
Bahrami also played tennis with children at the event in Ankara and was pleased by the interest shown by young athletes.
“Enjoy the game”
Bahrami emphasized that enjoying one’s work was as important in sport as achieving success. Saying players should do everything they could to improve, Bahrami noted that being the world’s top-ranked player or being lower down the rankings was not decisive on its own.
Bahrami said not everyone could be number one and advised athletes to give their best and enjoy the game while playing tennis.
