Tensions between U.S. President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have become openly apparent following the G7 summit. Meloni, known for her close political relationship with Trump, reacted sharply to his remarks about her.
In a statement to an Italian television channel, Trump claimed that Meloni had insisted heavily on taking a photo with him during the G7. Meloni stated that these words were completely fabricated and expressed astonishment at Trump's behavior.
Meloni also emphasized that Italy or she herself had never begged for anything. Furthermore, she argued that Trump shows more understanding towards the adversaries of the West and the U.S.
The tension also led Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani to cancel a visit to Washington. Tajani characterized Trump's words towards Meloni as an insult to all of Italy.
Tajani had been scheduled to attend the Italy-U.S. Business, Investment, Science, and Innovation Forum in Miami. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was also expected to speak at the conference.
The disagreement between Trump and Meloni has become more visible as debates continue over Washington's Iran policy and the American military presence in Europe. Meloni had previously stated her opposition to reducing the U.S. military presence in Italy.
Italy continues to be one of the key U.S. security hubs in Europe. There are approximately 13,000 active-duty U.S. military personnel stationed at six bases in the country.
