The Atlılar massacre
Attacks and intimidation aimed at driving Turks from Cyprus began in 1955. Massacres were carried out on August 14, 1974, in the village of Atlılar and the neighboring villages of Muratağa and Sandallar.
In Atlılar, 37 civilians, most of them women and children, were killed and placed in a mass grave by Greek Cypriot EOKA militants, soldiers and police, despite having surrendered to leave for other Turkish villages.
The mass grave in Atlılar was discovered on August 20, 1974, during searches carried out in the area following the second phase of the Cyprus Peace Operation.
