A shooting took place in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood of Montreal, Canada. A police officer, a civilian and the attacker were killed in the incident, and another police officer was wounded.
Witness account of the moment of the attack
Heidi Doctor, a witness who was in the area at the time, said she noticed a sudden flurry of activity among security forces while she was on a work call near her car after dropping her two children off at a barber shop. Doctor said, "I saw a police officer standing in front of me looking around, and then he pointed his weapon at the vehicle in front of me."
She then saw in her mirror a large number of security personnel running towards the Hilton Hotel and called her father to try to understand what was happening. Shortly afterwards, she said, a large number of police officers flooded the area.
Children trapped inside the barber shop
About 20 minutes later, police asked Doctor to abandon her car and leave the area. She refused, however, saying her children, aged 16 and 14, were in a nearby barber shop and that no one knew they were there.
Doctor said, "My children were in there and I didn't want to leave them. After the police arrived, I couldn't even get out of my car. I've been waiting for two and a half hours, they're hiding in the back and are probably hungry now." She added that her children heard the gunshots from inside the barber shop.
Security measures in the area
Montreal police declared a state of emergency in the area, asking residents to stay inside their homes, close their doors and windows, and keep away from the scene. Parts of the Decarie Expressway and surrounding roads were closed to traffic due to the ongoing security operation.
Police announced that one of the suspects had been "neutralised." Security measures and investigations are continuing to determine the details and motive of the incident.
The area where the shooting occurred is home to a large number of Jewish residents and institutions, as well as kosher restaurants and shops. While unverified reports have circulated suggesting Jewish institutions may have been targeted or that there could be multiple attackers, authorities have not confirmed this information.
