Tottenham Hotspur welcomed with Maori pōwhiri ceremony on first New Zealand visit in 50 years
The English club Tottenham Hotspur was welcomed in New Zealand with a traditional 'pōwhiri' ceremony by the Maori people as part of its pre-season tour. The club's visit to Auckland marks its first trip to the country since 1976.
Tottenham Hotspur arrived in Auckland, New Zealand, for its pre-season tour. The English club was welcomed there with a traditional 'pōwhiri' ceremony organized by the Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei tribe of the indigenous Maori people.
A video shared on Tottenham's official social media account showed players and coaching staff participating in the ceremony alongside displays of Maori cultural figures.
The club's visit to New Zealand is its first to the country since playing an Auckland football team in 1976. Tottenham will also play a series of friendly matches in Australia as part of its pre-season tour.
