Trump commented on the discussions about the agreement reached between Iran and the US in a post on his social media account. "There is no question of the US paying $300 billion to Iran," Trump said, describing it as "fake news."
Agreement Between Iran and the US: Iran and the US announced on June 14 that they had reached a 14-point agreement aimed at stopping the war and resolving issues between the parties through negotiations, as part of a negotiation process mediated by Pakistan.
The agreement, called the "Islamabad Agreement," was digitally signed and enacted overnight by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump. The agreement includes provisions such as ending the war including in Lebanon, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and lifting the US naval blockade on Iran.
Following the signing of the agreement, the parties are expected to begin a 60-day negotiation period soon to reach a final deal on issues such as Iran's nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions. Article 6 of the agreement text states:
"The US, together with its regional partners, commits to preparing a definite and mutually agreed plan worth at least $300 billion for the reconstruction and economic development of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The mechanism for implementing this plan will be finalized within 60 days as part of the final agreement.
All necessary licenses, exemptions, and permits for the related financial transactions will be provided by the US." After the announcement of the agreement text, discussions arose about how and by whom the said money would be paid.
