U.S. President Donald Trump said while answering reporters’ questions at the White House that he did not know whether Vice President JD Vance would run in the 2028 presidential election. Trump said, “I talk to him about a lot of things, but we’ll see what happens. You never know who is thinking about running.”
Trump added, “There could be a lot of candidates, maybe nobody will run, maybe he won’t run. I don’t know who will run.” He made the remarks after Republicans lost both chambers of Congress to the Democrats in the November 3 midterm elections.

In a written statement after the election results, Vance had pointed to the Iran war, saying, “The reason we lost was the war.” According to Vance, voters who had supported Trump in 2024 went to the polls again but chose the Democrats because they were dissatisfied with the war, rising energy prices and the administration’s departure from the “America First” agenda. Vance said, “If you want to argue that it was worth it, that it was worth losing the Senate for the next six years, then make that argument.”
Trump continued to defend the military operation against Iran. “I think some of it was Iran, but people understood the importance of what I did regarding Iran. You can’t allow the world’s number one state sponsor of terrorism to have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said, acknowledging that a brief rise in gasoline prices also contributed to the defeat. Trump also said he thought Vance’s statement was “good” and that he knew Vance’s views on the war.
