In an interview with the Axios portal, U.S. President Donald Trump assessed the potential consequences of a military operation against Cuba.
Trump expressed the U.S. desire to expand its military presence in the Americas, stating such an operation could resemble the attempt in Venezuela in January, where Maduro was detained within 48 minutes.
Responding to whether an operation against Cuba would progress similarly to the Venezuela scenario, Trump said, "That's probably possible."
Comparison with Iran
Trump emphasized that Cuba and Venezuela are close to American territory, while Iran is much farther away.
He noted that the conflict with Iran became more complex and prolonged due to the country's distance and Tehran's possession of stronger armed forces.
"Venezuela has oil, Cuba does not. Cuba has wonderful land and a wonderful coastline," he added.
Avoided Direct Answer on Invasion Question
Trump avoided giving a direct answer to the question of a possible military intervention in Cuba, pointing out that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is closely monitoring the situation around the island.
Commenting on criticisms of the agreement reached between the U.S. and Iran, Trump claimed the deal effectively meant "unconditional surrender" and "regime change" for Tehran.
"They no longer have an army. All 159 of their ships are at the bottom of the sea," he said.
He added that a prolonged conflict with Iran could trigger a global economic crisis due to the Strait of Hormuz remaining closed and oil prices continuing to rise.
