US President Donald Trump told Fox News that senior Iranian officials contacted him directly to request a halt to airstrikes.
Following Trump's statement, the US Central Command announced that a new wave of attacks against Iran had been completed.
Trump also said that the US military carried out "devastating" and "severe" strikes against Iran the previous night. He stated that 49 Tomahawk missiles were used in the operation and that warplanes targeted radar and air defense systems.
According to Fox News, the attacks targeted several points along Iran’s southwestern coast in the Persian Gulf.
Iran-affiliated Tasnim News Agency reported, citing the Revolutionary Guards Central Command, that the US halted some of its attacks in southern Iran due to strong retaliation from Iranian armed forces.
The same source indicated that Iranian armed forces will continue to respond to US attacks.
The Revolutionary Guards’ statement noted that some US military facilities were attacked at the Ali Al-Salim and Ahmed Al-Jaber bases in Kuwait, as well as the Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain.
The report also mentioned that alarm sirens sounded in Kuwait and Bahrain. Kuwait’s General Staff announced efforts to intercept enemy missiles.
Trump added that if Tehran does not quickly sign an agreement to end the current crisis, the US is ready to rapidly escalate military actions. The president accused Iran of stalling and claimed the parties were close to reaching an agreement.
