US President Donald Trump stated that he does not oppose Ukraine and Russia establishing direct contact first to end the war. He added that the US could intervene if necessary after this process.
Answering reporters' questions aboard Air Force One, Trump expressed his support for a one-on-one meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He claimed to have brought the two leaders to this point and said a solution is approaching.
Trump reiterated that the war should never have happened. He said the full-scale invasion of Ukraine would not have occurred if he had been in office in 2022.
Zelenskiy's Call for Direct Talks
Trump's remarks came immediately after Kiev's open invitation to Moscow. Zelenskiy called on Putin for a face-to-face meeting in a neutral country, mentioning Switzerland, Turkey, or an Arab country as options.
Zelenskiy also noted that the US and European partners could act as security guarantors during the talks. This clearly brought the proposal to elevate diplomatic contacts to the leaders' level into the spotlight.
Kremlin's Rejection and Moscow Proposal
Putin rejected the invitation, arguing that such a summit would be pointless at this stage. The Russian leader claimed that a direct meeting would especially benefit Ukraine.
The Kremlin responded to Zelenskiy's proposal by saying that if a meeting is desired, Zelenskiy should come to Moscow. Zelenskiy, however, said there is no reason for a Ukrainian leader to visit Russia's capital after years of war, and similarly, a Russian leader cannot be expected to go to Kiev.
Kiev's Strong Response
Zelenskiy described the Kremlin's stance as weak and said it shows Putin does not want to end the war. The Ukrainian leader openly criticized Moscow's unconstructive behavior.
The Ukrainian side also reminded that increasing fuel shortages, rising prices, and a possible second wave of mobilization are putting pressure on the Russian economy. Zelenskiy argued that tightening international economic sanctions is the most reliable way to change the course of the war.
Diplomatic Pressure Rises as Attention Turns to Leaders
Trump's statement came at a time when diplomatic pressure over the war's future is increasing. On one side, Kiev is pushing for direct talks, while Moscow is slowing the process by setting its own conditions.
Washington's role has become a topic of debate again following Trump's remarks. The US President said he welcomes the parties making progress between themselves first and believes a solution is near.
