The paintings of Turkish cinema legend Türkan Şoray and the works of painter Yalçın Gökçebağ have come together at the 'Meeting in the Garden of Memories' exhibition at Müze Gazhane in Kadıköy, Istanbul.
Speaking at the opening, Şoray emphasized her passion for painting, saying, "I painted the states of womanhood. Because I am a woman, because I played female characters in films, I wanted to put on canvas those who left a mark on my memory and heart. The oppressed woman, the working woman, the woman struggling to hold on to life, the woman who has gained her freedom and economic security..." she said.
Painter Yalçın Gökçebağ expressed his happiness that his works were appreciated, saying, "Art in Turkey is still new. Being one of its pioneers is a source of pride. It is our duty to get people accustomed to art, to have them hang paintings on their walls; we are trying to spread this from Istanbul to Anatolia." he said.
IMM Deputy Mayor Nuri Aslan also stated in his speech that they were witnessing a special moment that brought together two great masters who left their mark on different branches of art under one roof. Aslan said, "Today we will get to know our esteemed artist Türkan Şoray from a completely different angle. We will see her not through the characters she portrayed on the silver screen, but through colors, through her inner world and dreams reflected on canvas. This exhibition brings together the memories distilled from Şoray's cinema and Gökçebağ's brush that embraces nature and humanity in a magnificent visual feast." he said.
The 'Meeting in the Garden of Memories' exhibition runs through August 30 at Müze Gazhane.
