Istanbul Deputy Governor Mehmet Sülün said, 'We will wave our red flag, for which our martyrs gave their lives, both on the July 15 Bridge today and at our other events,' while July 15 Association President İsmail Hakkı Turunç stated, 'The Turkish nation is a nation that knows what freedom and independence mean. It has an understanding that will make any sacrifice to protect this freedom, no matter the cost.
The heroism displayed during the July 15 treacherous coup attempt is an indication of this,' he said. As part of the 10th anniversary of the July 15 treacherous coup attempt, Turkish flags were hung on the July 15 Martyrs, Fatih Sultan Mehmet, and Yavuz Sultan Selim bridges over the Bosphorus.
A ceremony was held on the July 15 Martyrs Bridge in cooperation with the Presidency's Directorate of Communications, the Istanbul Governor's Office, and the July 15 Association, for the hanging of a Turkish flag and giant banners reading 'The Will is Ours, the Victory is Ours' on the bridge.
Speaking at the ceremony, Istanbul Deputy Governor Mehmet Sülün expressed that he commemorates the July 15 martyrs with mercy, saying, 'We are on the July 15 Martyrs Bridge, one of the symbols of our nation's heroic resistance. We will wave our red flag, for which our martyrs gave their lives, both on the July 15 Bridge today and at our other events.
I commemorate with mercy all our martyrs, especially our 253 martyrs, who gave their lives on this bridge and ensured our flag waves freely,' he said. July 15 Association President İsmail Hakkı Turunç also noted that 10 years have passed since the treacherous coup attempt and that they have not left the martyrs' families and veterans alone, saying, 'From this we understand that
the Turkish nation is a nation that knows what freedom and independence mean. It has an understanding that will make any sacrifice to protect this freedom, no matter the cost. The heroism displayed during the July 15 treacherous coup attempt is an indication of this,' he said.
Turunç continued: 'From the day we were born, with the call to prayer recited in our ears, with the lullabies our mothers and elders sang to us, we grew up with love of homeland, love of nation, love of Allah and the Prophet, and whatever the red lines of this nation are, we were raised with that education. Even if the world's greatest superpower, an imperial power, confronts us, it will never be able to destroy our state or divide our nation.
Let no imperial country make calculations over Turkey. When our esteemed President said, 'I recognize no power other than the power of the nation. I call my nation to the squares,' people of all age groups took to the squares. The result was victory, freedom, and a reconsideration of the imperial countries' calculations.
After the speeches, a Turkish flag measuring 15 meters in length and 20 meters in width was hung on the July 15 Martyrs Bridge by protocol members and relatives of the martyrs. At the same time, Turkish flags were also hung on the Yavuz Sultan Selim and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges over the Bosphorus, as well as the Osmangazi and 1915 Çanakkale bridges, on the occasion of July 15.
