Unless the government takes additional steps, a liter of petrol on Istanbul’s European side would rise from 80.40 lira to about 92.87 lira, and diesel from 93.50 lira to 97.10 lira.
Under a presidential decree published in July, the sliding-scale mechanism for petrol ends on October 1, raising the special consumption tax from 4.43 lira to its legal ceiling of 14.83 lira per liter, or about 12.48 lira including VAT. Sözcü reported, citing talks with the sector, that the Finance Ministry decided against a phased transition for petrol, while diesel tax is rising by 3 lira a month through year-end; the ministry has not made an official statement.
