Taha Çakmak, general manager of Türkiye Sigorta and Türkiye Hayat Emeklilik, both part of the Türkiye Wealth Fund, resigned as of Oct. 14, according to business news site Patronlar Dünyası. The outlet also reported that a precautionary freeze was placed on his assets and that he was banned from leaving the country.
It has not been disclosed which authority ordered the measures or in connection with which investigation. As of Oct. 15, the company’s website still listed Çakmak as vice chairman and CEO.
From the central bank to an insurance giant

A graduate of Hacettepe University’s business administration department, Çakmak worked for many years at Ziraat Bank. He served as deputy chairman of the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK) from 2019 to 2021 and was appointed deputy governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye in October 2021.
Çakmak became general manager of Türkiye Sigorta and Türkiye Hayat Emeklilik in August 2023 and was later re-elected vice chairman and general manager at the company’s general assembly.
Türkiye Sigorta was formed in 2020 through the merger of state-owned insurers Halk, Ziraat and Güneş under the Türkiye Wealth Fund and is listed on Borsa Istanbul.
