The United States of America plans to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit to be held in Miami in 2026. The summit, hosted by the USA, will take place on December 14-15 at the National Doral facilities in Florida. A senior official from the Trump administration announced that all G20 members will be invited to the ministerial meetings and the leaders' summit. However, then-US President Donald Trump expressed doubt that Putin would accept the invitation. Trump stated that while Putin's attendance would be beneficial, the likelihood of participation is low.
Putin has not attended the G20 summit in person since 2019 and has generally participated via video link in recent years. The main reason for this is the International Criminal Court's issuance of an arrest warrant for Putin. Since the USA is not a member of the International Criminal Court, there is no obligation to arrest Putin if he comes to US soil. Trump and Putin met in Alaska in August 2025 to hold talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
These developments are seen as a diplomatic opening in US-Russia relations. The Kremlin has stated that it has not yet decided whether Putin will attend the G20 summit.
